Tra l'autunno del 1897 e l'estate del 1898 quattro famiglie trascorrono, apparentemente in modo tranquillo, la loro vita in una cascina della campagna bergamasca. Tra i componenti di questa comunità esiste un profondo legame che li porta a vivere insieme le cose belle e quelle brutte che la vita riserva loro. Quando si tratta di versare al severo Mesagiù, il padrone della fattoria, i due terzi dei prodotti agricoli tutti cercano di barare per guadagnare qualche chilo di farina. Insieme uccidono il maiale, separano i contendenti e prendono parte alle sagre paesane e alle funzioni religiose. Un giorno a Menek si rompe uno zoccolo e papà Batistì per ripararlo è costretto a tagliare, senza chiedere permesso, una pianta del padrone...
