Kimberly Wells (Fonda), giornalista televisiva, e il suo operatore Richards Adams (Douglas) stanno effettuando un servizio sulla centrale nuleare di Ventana, in California. Proprio durante la loro visita aviene un incidente. Richards, contravvenendo alle disposizioni, filma tutto l'accaduto. Il direttore della rete televisiva però si rifiuta di mandare in onda il filmato. Kimberly si mette allora in contatto con Jack Godell (Lemmon), il tecnico che ha condotto le operazioni durante l'incidente, mentre Richard trafuga il filmato. Godell, resosi conto dell'effettiva pericolosità dell'impianto, si barrica nella centrale operativa facendosi intervistare dalla televisione.
