Nel 1958, a Teheran, mentre sono in corso i cambiamenti voluti dall’ayatollah Khomeini, il suonatore Nasser-Ali non riesce a trovare uno strumento degno di sostituire il suo tar, che la moglie ha incautamente rotto durante un litigio. Disperato, decide di mettersi a letto e aspettare l’arrivo di Azrael, l’angelo della morte, rifiutando cibo ed esortazioni dei familiari. Durante gli ultimi otto giorni che lo separano dalla dipartita, il musicista ne approfitta per ricordare la sua vita passata, caratterizzata dall’amore per la madre e la bella Irâne, e immaginare l’ipotetica vita futura che attenderà i figli.
