È il giorno dell'inaugurazione dell'Esposizione Universale a Parigi su cui domina la Torre Eiffel, monumento di ferro alto 300 metri, simbolo del prestigio della Ville Lumière, "del suo ruolo nel mondo e forse anche della sua anima". Il creatore della Torre è Gustave Eiffel, soprannominato "il mago del ferro" per la sua capacità di trasformare quel metallo in un merletto, e tuttavia sfruttarne anche tutte le potenzialità architettoniche. Ma Eiffel dovette essere convinto a realizzare l'opera che l'ha reso più celebre, ed era stato un antico amore di gioventù a spingerlo a quel gesto "libero e audace".
