Durante una missione spaziale, una nuvola di nanoparticelle nere e minaccianti si solleva dalla Luna e attacca tre astronauti. Sulla terra seguono un'indagine e un processo che congedano prematuramente il comandante Bryan Harper, sopravvissuto con la collega Jocinda Flower al misterioso incidente. Per i suoi superiori, Harper ha commesso un errore che è costato la vita a un membro dell'equipaggio. Dieci anni, un divorzio e diverse bottiglie dopo, è richiamato alle armi per salvare la Terra. Perché la Luna sta cadendo, la Nasa è confusa e l'esercito americano ha una un'idee balorda e atomica. Spetterà ai due vecchi colleghi riprendere la rotta e scoprire l'arcano. Li aiuta nell'impresa KC Houseman, podacster complottista convinto che la causa del disastro sia un'entità extraterrestre annidata nel cuore dell'astro. Non resta che accendere la rampa di lancio e verificare su campo (lunare).
