Alma è una giovane promettente pianista, in lizza per la filarmonica di Los Angeles. La morte del nonno la riporta, però, d'urgenza tra i boschi canadesi in cui ha trascorso l'infanzia. Qui fa amicizia con la femmina di lupo artico a cui il nonno era solito offrire ospitalità e, una mattina, dopo una violenta tempesta, si ritrova letteralmente tra le mani un cucciolo di leone, scampato ad un atterraggio aereo di emergenza. Quando anche la lupa porta in casa di Alma il suo cucciolo, il piccolo di lupo e quello di leone diventano inseparabili. Ma mamma lupa scompare improvvisamente e Alma non se la sente di ripartire: tocca a lei, ora, fare da madre ai due animali e assicurarsi che non accada loro nulla di male.
