Niccolò (Milian), è in cerca della protagonista per un suo film, incontra Mavi (Silverio) e se ne innamora. Inizia una specie di giallo. Il regista è minacciato e pedinato, Mavi scompare. Niccolò la cerca, aiutato da Ida (Boisson), una donna priva delle ambiguità di Mavi. Ida, però, rifiuta la complicata relazione che si profila, tanto più che è incinta di un altro. Il cinema introspettivo di Antonioni alle prese ancora una volta con un'angoscia esistenziale, ma il regista sembra aver già dato il meglio di sé. Alla fine restano in mente soltanto una grande precisione formale e il volto di Christine Boisson.
