Mentre divampa la guerra di Secessione, il Biondo, Tuco e Sentenza, tre individui poco raccomandabili, si mettono controvoglia in società per trovare un tesoro in monete d'oro, nascosto in una tomba. Due di loro conoscono parte del segreto per trovare il luogo che si trova oltre le linee nemiche, il terzo è senza scrupoli e può risultare utile nell'impresa. L'accordo è difficile da mantenere: la caccia viene fatta dai tre separatamente, ma sorvegliandosi a vicenda, fino allo scontro decisivo nel cimitero.
