Omar Razaghi è uno studente di origini iraniane diplomatosi all'università del Colorado al quale viene assegnata un borsa di studio per scrivere la biografia ufficiale dello scomparso scrittore latino-americano Jules Gund. Ma, a sorpresa, la Fondazione Gund nega a Omar l'autorizzazione alle ricerche. Su consiglio della fidanzata Deirdre, il ragazzo si reca in Uruguay per incontrare gli eredi - la vedova, il fratello e la giovane amante del defunto - e chiedere all'esecutore testamentario di cambiare idea. Si ritrova però coinvolto in un vespaio di intrighi, relazioni improprie e stravaganze.
