Un gangster muore in un incidente d'auto. Prima di spirare rivela ai soccorritori di aver sepolto una somma enorme. Inizia così una frenetica corsa al tesoro. Per battere gli altri sul tempo ognuno usa i mezzi più disparati, tra fragorose bagarre e situazioni stravaganti. Sul più bello si inserisce però anche un capitano di polizia (Spencer Tracy), che scatena l'ultimo e delirante inseguimento.
