Daigo Kobayashi è un violoncellista la cui orchestra si è sciolta, lasciandolo senza lavoro. Stanco e privo di speranza, decide di fare ritorno insieme alla moglie alla sua città natale, con l'intento di ricominciare una nuova vita. La ottiene un incarico come nokanshi, praticamente un becchino. Il suo lavoro consiste nel prendersi cura dei corpi delle persone decedute, pulendoli, sistemandoli e collocandoli nella loro bara, per accompagnarli nell'altro mondo nella miglior modo possibile. Nonostante la moglie e i vicini non nutrano molta stima per ciò che fa, Daigo scopre in questo suo nuovo lavoro ciò che mancava alla sua vita.
