Mario, postino di un'isoletta dell'Italia meridionale dove viene a vivere l'esiliato poeta cileno Pablo Neruda, instaura con lui un'amicizia che lo inizia ai fascinosi segreti della poesia. Anche grazie a ciò, Mario riesce a sposare Beatrice, poi Neruda parte e sembra dimenticarsi dell'amico italiano. Che verrà "pestato" a morte durante un raduno politico e lascerà un figlio di nome Pablito.
