Siamo nell'immediato dopoguerra a Giancaldo, un paese della Sicilia. Il piccolo Salvatore è introdotto ai misteri dell cinema dal proiezionista Alfredo e lo sostituisce dopo che Alfredo è rimasto cieco in un incendio. Alla passione per il cinema si aggiunge l'amore contrastato per Elena. Dopo il servizio militare Salvatore si ferma a Roma, dove riesce a entrare nel mondo del cinema. Tornerà al paese per i funerali di Alfredo; troverà tutto diverso e un dono del suo vecchio amico.
