Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) ritorna in libertà dopo aver trascorso gran parte della sua esistenza detenuto in un carcere, dal quale usciva ed entrava in continuazione a causa di alcuni furti dettati dalle estreme condizioni di povertà in cui viveva. Deciso a lasciarsi dietro quegli anni e Javert (Russell Crowe), lo spietato poliziotto che non ha mai smesso di braccarlo, Jean prova a costruirsi una nuova identità che lo riscatti agli occhi di una società che da sempre lo considera un reietto. L'incontro con l'operaia Fantine (Anne Hathaway), poi, fa sì che prenda a cuore le sorti della figlia di lei (Amanda Seyfried), cambiando per sempre il resto della sua vita.
