Della delicata faccenda viene incaricato l'agente segreto inglese Harrry Palmer che organizza la fuga mediante un finto funerale. A destinazione, però, nella bara non si trova il "cadavere" finto dell'ufficiale, ma quello, vero, di un'altra spia.
