Nel Giappone del Cinquecento il potere dei grandi feudatari è immenso. Il principe Hidetora, sentendosi ormai vecchio e stanco, decide di dividere i suoi possedimenti tra i figli Taro, Jiro e Saburo. Quest'ultimo rifiuta perchè convinto che nulla di buono potrà scaturire da ciò. E le sue profezie si avverano: Jiro uccide Taro, sposa la seconda moglie del padre e inizia a perseguitarlo. Il vecchio sovrano muore, Jiro e Saburo si fanno la guera e periscono, il feudo un tempo potente è in rovina. Solo un cieco sopravvive.
