Cristina, figlia del re Gustavo di S. Tulipe, è a Roma con papà in missione diplomatica. Il re è infatti venuto a chiedere un grosso prestito per risanare le disastrate finanze del suo Stato. Annoiata dalla routine del protocollo, una mattina Cristina sfugge al controllo e salta su un autobus guidato da Barnaba Cecchini. È il classico colpo di fulmine e Barnaba la conduce a spasso per Roma dichiarandosi innamorato di lei. Ma la differenza di classe sembra insormontabile. Barnaba riporta la principessa all'ambasciata, dove ritrova il padre deluso per non aver ricevuto il prestito ma, come per magia, è Barnaba a risolvere la situazione.
