Fellini segue alcuni clown e ricostruisce il magico mondo del circo a partire da quando, bambino, entrò per la prima volta sotto un tendone restandone affascinato. Alcuni personaggi della sua infanzia riminese sono a loro volta assimilabili a figure clownesche: la suora nana, il capostazione bersagliato dai lazzi degli studenti, i vetturini della stazione... La conclusione è una sgangherata parata, allegorico richiamo alla morte del clown.
