Nella Georgia degli anni Venti ancora dominata da una mentalità schiavista e razzista, Celie (Goldberg), appena adolescente, viene violentata dall'uomo al quale è stata data come compagna. Successivamente le vengono sottratti i figli nati dalla relazione e viene venduta a un altro uomo. Questi, ancora più brutale del primo, comncia anche a insidiare Nettie, la sorella più giovane di Celie, che lo respinge con decisione. Cacciata da casa Nettie in seguito alla sua "ribellione", alla povera Celie non resta che piegarsi alla vita da schiava. Solo moltissimi anni dopo potrà riabbracciare, in un prato di fiori viola, la sorella e i figli.
