Veronika e Boris sono due giovani moscoviti che si innamorano l'uno dell'altro appena prima dello scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale. Boris deve partire per il fronte e Veronika, rimasta sola, per far fronte alle difficoltà economiche della sua famiglia, accetta di sposare il ricco cugino, pur non amandolo. Alla fine della guerra, lei attenderà il ritorno di Boris dal fronte, nella speranza vana di poterlo riabbracciare.
