La cittadina di Amity, situata su un'isoletta dell'oceano atlantico, deve al turismo la sua prosperità. Una sera, una ragazza viene dilaniata da uno squalo enorme. Davanti alla denuncia del fatto, lo sceriffo Martin vorrebbe far sospendere le balneazioni, ma si trova di fronte l'opposizione del sindaco, preoccupato per gli inconvenienti economici di una tale decisione. Il mostro però colpisce ancora. Martin organizza una squadra con l'anziano pescatore Quint e con l'oceanologo Matt Hooper.
