Nel 2200 una missione spaziale scende su Altair. In tutto il pianeta, di un'intera colonia terrestre solo il professor Morbius e sua figlia, serviti dal robot Robby, sono sopravvissuti alle incursioni di mostruose quanto misteriose entità. Gli astronauti cominciano a nutrire qualche sospetto sul professore quando scoprono a cosa servono veramente i misteriosi marchingegni presenti nel laboratorio.
