Siamo a Ferrara, negli anni che preludono la Seconda Guerra Mondiale; anche in Italia sta per prendere il via la politica antisemita. Nella lussuosa villa dei Finzi Contini, un'antica e aristocratica famiglia ebraica, si susseguono vicende quotidiane, amori ed equivoci sentimentali tra i rampolli più giovani. Ma questi drammi amorosi vengono ben presto sopraffatti dal crudele dramma storico costituito dalla guerra e dalle deportazioni.
