Dom Kobb (Leonardo Di Caprio) è decisamente il miglior ladro in circolazione nel suo campo. Stiamo parlando di un molto particolare tipo di furto, però: la pericolosa e difficile arte di estrarre segreti rilevanti dall'inconscio durante la fase onirica, il momento in cui la mente abbassa tutte le sue difese e diventa vulnerabile. Questa abilità ne ha fatto un personaggio di rilievo nel mondo dello spionaggio industriale, ma il prezzo che ha dovuto pagare per la sua notorietà è di essere stato condannato a un'eterna fuga. Egli dunque è privato della possibilità di amare e di essere amato, finché non gli viene offerta una possibilità di redenzione e di uscita dal circolo vizioso. Questa volta però, Cobb e il suo team di specialisti, dovranno operare un totale ribaltamento di fronte e invece di sottrarre informazioni dovranno riuscire a crearne: invece di rubare semplicemente un'idea dovranno farla nascere, generarla da zero. La perfezione, applicata al crimine.
