Doug Carlin è un agente dell’Fbi assegnato al caso di un attentato terroristico che ha fatto esplodere un ferry boat e ucciso centinaia di persone. Lo stesso giorno viene assassinata Claire Kuchever, una giovane donna che Doug sente di aver già conosciuto. Per scoprire i colpevoli, viene reclutato da un reparto segreto che, con mezzi tecnologici avanzatissimi, è riuscito a creare un sistema per rivedere in diretta avvenimenti del passato. Doug scopre che il congegno funziona come una macchina del tempo, che gli permette di interferire con gli avvenimenti; inizia quindi una personale indagine, a ritroso nei giorni, per sventare l'attentato e salvare Claire.
