Nel novembre del 1963 il Presidente degli Stati Uniti John Kennedy muore sotto i colpi di un cecchino mentre percorre, a bordo di un'auto scoperta, una via di Dallas. Dell'omicidio viene accusato Lee Harvey Oswald che poi viene quasi subito ucciso da un malvivente di nome Jack Ruby. L'impressione che l'attentato lascia nel paese è enorme, ma per quel che riguarda le indagini il caso sembra proprio chiuso. Non è così per Jim Garrison, procuratore distrettuale di New Orleans, che s'intestardisce a cercare la verità, continua le sue ricerche e alla fine arriva ad una conclusione sorprendente. Un complotto della Cia, in accordo con i boss dell'industria bellica, sarebbe stato all'origine dell'attentato.
