Una sera, per scrutare meglio in cielo un nuovo pianeta appena scoperto, Rhonda (Britt Marling), una studentessa d’astrofisica, mentre sta guidando si sporge dal finestrino della propria auto. Accusata di omicidio, la ragazza trascorre quattro anni in carcere e una volta tornata in libertà incontra il musicista John, vedovo di una delle vittime, senza rivelare la sua vera identità e innamorandosene.
