John Norman Howard, cantante "rock" in declino (per colpa della droga e dell'alcool) scopre in un night di second'ordine una collega, Esther Hoffmann, che lo affascina per la sua grande bravura e per le sue doti umane. I due si innamorano profondamente l'uno dell'altra, e si sposano. Tiratosi in disparte, John "lancia" Esther, facendo di lei una "star". Ne è felice, ma al tempo stesso geloso, per cui cede di nuovo all'alcool, interviene per disturbarle alle feste in onore della moglie, si fa trovare a letto con una giornalista. E' una crisi passeggera, però: l'amore per Esther, e di Esther, ne ha presto ragione. Egli e la sua compagna sono di nuovo uniti, ma anche la ritrovata felicità dura poco: John muore in un incidente d'auto. Legata per sempre a lui, Esther lo ricorderà con le sue canzoni.
