Dato per scomparso nel precedente film "Il pianeta delle scimmie", l'astronauta Taylor è in realtà sopravvissuto e si trova prigioniero nella "Zona proibita". Sulle sue tracce si mette un altro astronauta, Brent, che però viene a sua volta catturato. Il popolo delle scimmie sta per attaccare la città proibita. Nel corso del cruento scontro finale è proprio Taylor che innesca l'esplosione della bomba atomica che distrugge la Terra.
