Anna, figlia di un ambasciatore a riposo, e Claudia vengono invitate a una gita alle Eolie a bordo dello yatch di Sandro, architetto, fidanzato di Anna. Alla gita partecipano anche altri amici della coppia, ma nessuno sembra particolarmente incantato dal superbo paesaggio marino che li circonda. Dopo un litigio con Sandro, Anna improvvisamente scompare. Sandro e Claudia, inizialmente con gli altri componenti della compagnia, la cercano invano in vari luoghi; una volta rimasti soli sull'isola, tra loro si instaura un ambiguo rapporto, dapprima di reciproca tolleranza. Poi, man mano che svaniscono le speranze di trovare Anna, si abbandonano all'amore. Sembra una storia solida, ma l'uomo trova ben presto modo di abbandonarsi a un'avventura occasionale con un'altra donna. Claudia, dopo un momento di ribellione, si rassegna a perdonarlo...
