Marty (Colin Farrell), uno scrittore in crisi creativa per un romanzo che ha già iniziato e poi lasciato in sospeso, viene involontariamente coinvolto nel folle progetto di Billy (Sam Rockwell), un suo amico attore disoccupato, e Hans (Christopher Walken), uomo religioso ma dal passato violento, che hanno in mente di rapire un cane per estorcere del denaro ai proprietari. Quando il progetto si concretizza e i due sequestrano l'amato shihtzu dello psicopatico boss Charlie (Woody Harrelson), Marty scopre di aver trovato l'ispirazione giusta per continuare il suo libro: l'importante sarà però uscire vivo da tutta la vicenda.
