La vicenda di Ree Dolly, una ragazza di sedici anni molto determinata che vive nelle Ozark Mountains – la regione montuosa tra il Missouri e l'Arkansas – e che si occupa della madre, psichicamente sofferente, e dei due fratelli più piccoli. La situazione si complica quando scopre che la loro casa e la loro terra sono state impegnate dal padre, uno spacciatore, per pagare la cauzione ed essere messo in libertà, tranne poi non essersi presentato di fronte alla corte per l'udienza. Rae ha così solo una settimana per ritrovare il padre prima di perdere tutto quel poco che la sua già disastrata famiglia ha.
