I morti viventi hanno invaso gli Stati Uniti e il terrore dilaga. Quattro coraggiosi, due soldati, uno bianco e uno nero, due funzionari di una rete televisiva, una donna e un uomo, cercano scampo in elicottero. La scarsità di carburante, però li costringe ad atterrare sul tetto di un enorme supermercato, ignari che anche lì si nascondono degli zombi. Mentre i morti viventi, che si cibano di carne umana, tentano di sopraffarli, i quattro riescono a crearsi un rifugio all'interno del supermercato. Basterà?
