I primati la applicano subito usando un osso come strumento per cacciare, ma anche come arma per uccidere altri loro simili. Anno 2001: sulla Luna viene scoperto un misterioso monolite, identico a quello preistorico, che riceve impulsi da Giove. Qualche tempo dopo, diretto verso il pianeta maggiore del nostro sistema solare, l'astronauta Bowman è costretto a "uccidere" il computer Hal 9000, colpevole della morte dell'equipaggio. Anche per lui però non c'è ritorno.
