Jacques è un giornalista di un quotidiano molto diffuso in Francia. La sua reputazione di giornalista investigativo imparziale e talentuoso attira presto l'attenzione del Vaticano, che decide di reclutarlo per un compito speciale: prendere parte alla commissione chiamata a verificare l'autenticità di un'apparizione religiosa in un piccolo villaggio. Dopo il suo arrivo, Jacques conosce la giovane e sensibile Anna, colei che con il suo spirito puro sarebbe stata testimone dell'apparizione della Vergine Maria. Confrontandosi con i differenti punti di vista, Jacques scoprirà gradualmente quali forze oscure e nascoste siano in atto, ritrovandosi profondamente scosso.
