La psicologa Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) è spinta dal giovane assistente Tom (Cillian Murphy), che da sempre conduce approfondimenti sulla metafisica, a interessarsi alle farneticazioni del famoso medium Simon Silver (Robert De Niro), rifattosi vivo dopo trent’anni di misteriosa assenza e intenzionato a rivelare verità sempre più scioccanti sui metodi usati dalla scienza classica per spiegare l’esistenza dei fenomeni paranormali. Dapprima reticenti, i due studiosi dovranno rivedere le loro posizioni quando l’esistenza di Tom sarà attraversata da anomali episodi che ne alterano la percezione della realtà.
