La storia del suo Yip Man, imbattibile maestro di arti marziali nella Cina degli anni '30 che diffuse lo stile del Wing Chun, si mescola con istanze nazionaliste e, seppur all'interno di una trama "wuxipian" abbastanza lineare, con riflessioni esistenzialiste quasi inusitate in film del genere.
