Il diciannovenne Tino, aspirante pittore, si trova a Venezia ospite dello zio Fabio, ingegnere dell'azienda del gas, fiero della propria origine asburgica e di sua moglie Elisa. Da un soffita dell'antico palazzo una sera Tino sente provenire strani ed inspiegabili rumori. La verità gliela rivela l'anziana domestica che da anni vive in quella casa. In soffitta è confinato il fratello di Fabio impazzito per avere provocato la morte della nipotina Beba, figlia di primo letto di Elisa. Ma nessuno sa dove si trovi la tomba della bambina.
