Alla fine del secolo scorso, in un'industria tessile torinese, un grave incidente è la scintilla che fa scoppiare le prime proteste operaie contro le inumane condizioni di lavoro. La protesta si trasforma in un durissimo sciopero, guidato del professor Sinigaglia, durante il quale un operaio muore. Gli operai rientrano in fabbrica, sconfitti, ma con un filo di speranza.
