Passa il tempo e si arriva al 1950, il ragazzo ha ormai quindici anni e diventa testimone dell'invasione del suo paese da parte dell'esercito cinese guidato da Mao Tse Tung. Tenzin Gyatso, così si chiama il ragazzo lancia un appello che, però, rimane inascoltato in Occidente. Non gli rimane che andarsene in esilio in India.
