Durante l’estate del 1936, Toni Kurz (Benno Fürmann) e Andi Hinterstoisser (Florian Lukas), due militari bavaresi, decidono di lanciarsi all’assalto della parete nord dell’Eiger, nella più pura tradizione dell’alpinismo tedesco. Considerata una delle scalate più difficili del massiccio alpino, questa leggendaria e tragica ascensione sarà seguita da diversi giornalisti, tra cui la compagna di Toni, che lavora per una rivista tedesca. Goebbels del resto non esiterà a trasformare i due alpinisti in eroi del Terzo Reich, nonostante nessuno dei due fosse membro del partito nazionalsocialista.
