A New York, alcuni studenti della High School of Performing Art vengono seguiti durante un anno di intenso studio: le audizioni e le lezioni (scolastiche e di vita) si intrecciano agli amori, alle delusioni e alle speranze di chi sogna un posto in prima fila nel mondo dello spettacolo. Il film, sorta di commedia musicale, segue un andamento quasi documentaristico nella prima parte, per divenire più spettacolare nella seconda. La storia è largamente scontata, però, il film segue bene i vari protagonisti, nelle loro vicende personali e scolastiche.
