In un vecchio appartamento di Copenaghen dietro a un finto muro vengono ritrovati tre corpi mummificati, seduti attorno a un tavolo da pranzo con un ulteriore posto a sedere lasciato vuoto. Carl Mørck e Assad del Dipartimento Q devono scoprire l'identità delle mummie e chi è la quarta vittima predestinata. Scoprono così che gli ultimi residenti dell'appartamento erano collegati al famigerato ospedale femminile nell'isola di Sprogø, dove le pazienti venivano sottoposte a sterilizzazione forzata. Gli orrori commessi nella struttura rappresentano una delle pagine più deprecabili nella storia della Danimarca ma ci sono persone pronte a giurare che gli esperimenti che vi si commettevano sono continuati anche nel presente.
