Tra questi il più solerte è Montag, che però comincia ad avere dei dubbi quando conosce Clarissa. Lei è una giovane istitutrice e gli fa conoscere alcuni membri di un gruppo di uomini-libro che tengono viva in clandestinità la pratica della lettura. Montag diventa un ribelle.
