Nel suo errare, si imbatte un giorno in Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), un veterano di guerra fondatore e leader carismatico di un gruppo pseudo-religioso basato su metodi piuttosto innovativi. Ammaliato da quell'universo che sembra offrire risposte alle sue domande, Freddie ne diventa uno degli adepti subendo il fascino della figura di Lancaster, divenuto per lui uno spirito guida da ossequiare e seguire.
