Nel 1984, Ottobre Rosso, il più sofisticato sottomarino atomico dell'Urss, parte per una missione di cui gli americani riescono a decifrare il significato. Finché Jack Ryan, della Cia, intuisce che il comandante Ramius intende disertare e consegnare il sommergibile agli americani. Ma anche i sovietici hanno intuito il progetto e si mettono sulle tracce di Ottobre Rosso per distruggerlo. Ryan si fa calare con un elicottero nell'unità subacquea Dallas, comandata da Bart Mancuso, e l'inseguimento comincia. Ramius però è troppo bravo per farsi prendere.
