Durante l'occupazione tedesca di Roma, l'ingegnere comunista Manfredi (Pagliero) che milita nella Resistenza prende contatti con un compagno tipografo. La Gestapo è sulle sue tracce, ma l'uomo trova rifugio presso l'abitazione di un sacerdote (Fabrizi) mentre l'operaio è arrestato e la sua donna (Magnani) viene uccisa da una raffica di mitra. La delazione di Marina (Michi), un'attricetta cocainomane che ha avuto in passato una relazione con Manfredi e che ora sta nel giro degli ufficiali tedeschi, consente loro di cattuare l'ingegnere e il prete. Il primo, benchè torturato a morte, non rivela i nomi dei compagni; il prete viene fucilato mentre riceve l'ultimo saluto da alcuni ragazzini della sua parrocchia.
