1945: Tommy W. Hart, giovane tenente figlio di papà, arriva in un campo di prigionia con l'onta di aver svelato ai tedeschi, sotto tortura, l'ubicazione di alcuni importanti depositi di armi nelle Ardenne. Dopo l'omicidio di un soldato americano cinico e razzista, del quale viene incolpato l'unico militare nero del campo, Hart ottiene di svolgere un regolare processo: la sua diventa ben presto una lotta contro i pregiudizi dei suoi commilitoni e soprattutto contro il colonnello McNamara, presidente dell'improvvisata corte marziale. Ben presto, però, Hart scopre che le cose non sono così semplici, e che il processo (il cui esito pare scontato sin dall'inizio, con la condanna del soldato di colore) serve solo a nascondere un progetto di evasione collettiva...
