In un futuro prossimo, l’aumento vertiginoso di azioni criminali costringe gli Stati Uniti a delegare a soggetti privati la costruzione e la gestione di nuovi penitenziari. Tra le prigioni appena sorte, la peggiore è sicuramente quella di Terminal Island, luogo in cui sono rinchiusi coloro che si macchiano di delitti efferati, come ad esempio Carl Lucas, ergastolano accusato di aver ucciso due poliziotti durante una rapina. Inoltre, Terminal Island è usata dal proprietario come set di un violento reality show che vede come protagonisti i detenuti impegnati in violenti scontri d’auto, modificate e armate, e che mette in palio la libertà per chi riesce a sopravvivere. Carl viene contattato dalla conduttrice del programma, l’ambiziosa September Jones, ed è costretto a partecipare alla gara, divenendone presto l’eroe assoluto.
