Nel Mississipi, due balordi ubriachi stuprano la figlia di dieci anni di Carl, operaio di colore. L'uomo, incapace di controllarsi, si fa giustizia da sé, uccide i due colpevoli, viene imprigionato. La difesa viene assunta da Jake, giovane avvocato pieno di ideali e di grandi speranze. Deve però scontrarsi con una situazione sociale in cui dominano preconcetti, omertà, complicità. Dopo molti tentennamenti, accetta la collaborazione di Ellen, studentessa di legge energica e intraprendente, che si butta nell'impresa in maniera tale da subire poi le vendette di alcuni membri del locale KuKluxKlan che la sequestra e la minaccia.
